Practically Perfect

Well, those crazy ladies at MCPA have done it again! They put on a show that just amazes. I know most of you think, ‘cmon it’s just a dance recital. Not so my friend. This is entertainment! The amazing part comes when you know it’s done on a shoe string budget with the help of many, many, many parent volunteers.

It was last year when they decided no one deserved to sit through those boring end of the year dance recitals we’ve all been a part of. They took on and produced a mash-up of The Wizard of Oz, Wicked, and The Wiz. A great production to say the least. However, this year I think they out did themselves.

_RAH6961This year’s final show was a production of Mary Poppins. I gotta say the choices for leads were dead on. Kayla as Mary, Caroline as Bert, with Rachel and Alex as the Banks children. I’m not sure how you could come up with a better cast. Their personalities just meshed._RAH8836

Then of course you have a supporting cast of some of the best dancers in Maryland, and the show stealing little babies. I watched the show in various stages of development and at one point was a tad bit concerned. I don’t think they ever had so many babies on stage at one time. Watching rehearsals and seeing kids stumble here and there. Kids facing left when they should be right. Trips to the bathroom in the middle of a song. If it had been me I would have said “no thank you”. Not MCPA. They said, “Run it again!”

The end result was, in my opinion, the best show ever. Better than the Nutcracker. Better than last year’s Oz. I dare say better than chocolate. Mmm, chocolate.

It would also be a disservice if I didn’t mention the performance of Karlie as the Bird Lady. I don’t call myself a dance critic but I really felt that performance. She was in it._RAH7841 Oh, and lets not forget “Step in Time” – Wow!

If you missed the show that’s too bad. The DVD just isn’t gonna do it justice.

Congratulations to the dancers of all levels and the parents for supporting their children in a fabulous art.

Photos from the show will be up in a day or two. For those that took part in the portrait sessions, your proofs are here.

Production still shots.
